Enterprising Cumbria
About the company
Enterprising Cumbria is the economic development body for Cumbria, supported by Cumberland Council and Westmorland & Furness Council, with a mission to drive business growth and economic resilience across the county.
Net zero and industrial decarbonisation are central strategic priorities for Enterprising Cumbria, reflecting Cumbria's unique position at the forefront of the UK's energy transition. The county is home to Sellafield — the UK's most significant nuclear site — as well as Spirit Energy's Morecambe Bay operations and a rapidly growing clean energy sector. Enterprising Cumbria works across industry, business, the public sector and local communities to facilitate decarbonisation, funding carbon audits, identifying circular economy opportunities and supporting green business start-ups and scale-ups. It leads the North West Net Zero Hub's activities in Cumbria, implementing the region's Clean Energy Strategy and connecting businesses to the funding, expertise and partnerships needed to reduce their emissions.
Cumbria's energy assets — spanning nuclear, offshore wind, carbon storage and hydrogen — make the county an essential contributor to the North West's decarbonisation ambitions, and Enterprising Cumbria is the body ensuring local businesses and communities can fully participate in that transition.
