Tata Chemicals Europe

Tata Chemicals Europe (TCE) is based in Northwich, Cheshire, and is the UK's only manufacturer of soda ash and sodium bicarbonate — essential materials used in glass-making, pharmaceuticals, food production, water purification and haemodialysis treatments.

TCE is a pioneer in industrial carbon capture, having opened the UK's first and largest industrial-scale Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) plant at its Winnington site in 2022. This £20 million facility captures 40,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year from its combined heat and power plant, purifies it to pharmaceutical grade and uses it as a raw material to produce EcoKarb® — the world's first carbon-neutral sodium bicarbonate, exported to over 60 countries. TCE's CHP plant also supplies heat and power to other industrial businesses in the Northwich area, making it a critical piece of shared energy infrastructure.

Building on this success, TCE has announced a further £60 million investment into a new pharmaceutical-grade sodium bicarbonate plant at Northwich, due to open in 2027, which will also use captured CO₂ as its primary feedstock. TCE is a visible example of how industrial decarbonisation can drive export growth and secure high-quality manufacturing jobs in the North West.
