United Utilities
About the company
United Utilities is the water and wastewater company for the North West of England, serving around 7 million people across more than 3 million homes and 200,000 business premises. As the operator of over 100 water treatment works and 575 wastewater treatment works across the region, United Utilities is both a significant energy consumer and an increasingly important contributor to the North West's low carbon energy system.
The company has set a net zero target for 2050 and is committed to powering its North West operations entirely from renewable electricity. United Utilities is exploring innovative ways to contribute to the wider regional decarbonisation agenda, including trialling world-first technology at its Davyhulme wastewater treatment works in Manchester to produce clean hydrogen and graphene from sewage biogas. Its 400MW combined heat and power asset at Davyhulme already generates all of its electricity on-site from biomethane. United Utilities is currently investing £13 billion in the largest environmental improvement programme in the region for over a century, incorporating rigorous carbon management across its capital programme.
As a provider of industrial process water to many of the North West's major manufacturers, United Utilities plays an enabling role in supporting other industries to remain operational as they transition to low carbon production.
