"The North West has a well-established chemical industry that has grown out of the ever-changing needs of the society around us. It is my hope, my vision, that the region continues to use its heritage to lead the move to a net zero society." - Nigel Bouckley
Nigel Bouckley, the UK Country & Operations Manager at INEOS Inovyn, is a leader at the forefront of revolutionising the North West's energy landscape. With a firm belief in pragmatic sustainability and a rich background in chemical engineering, his leadership is shaping a future of responsible energy consumption. In this exclusive interview, Nigel shares his insights into the journey towards net-zero, the potential of green hydrogen, and the role of collaboration in spearheading clean energy initiatives.
Background and Expertise
Nigel's impressive journey began with a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Salford, followed by his Chartered Engineer status. For over 30 years, he's been a driving force in the chemical industry, mainly under the banner of INEOS Inovyn. Notably, he's contributed significantly to the plants producing essential chemicals crucial to everyday life, some of which are energy-intensive.
His role has extended beyond operational expertise, involving the implementation of Safety, Health & Environmental legislation for more than three decades. This vast experience lays the foundation for his innovative approaches to sustainability.
Shaping Sustainable Initiatives at INEOS Inovyn
Nigel's outlook is rooted in realism. His blend of historical context, understanding of chemical processes, and the collaborative synergy of young and experienced professionals ensures that sustainability plans are grounded in feasible action. He recognises the vital role the chemical industry plays in driving the transition to a net zero society and envisions a green hydrogen revolution that leverages the North West's rich electrolysis history, particularly at Runcorn.
Green Hydrogen: Powering the Future
"Green hydrogen is the ultimate fuel. Often people say electric or hydrogen. The two need to work together... Green fuel transport fuelled by sunlight and water." - Nigel Bouckley
Nigel underscores the historical significance of the Runcorn site, a cornerstone of the North West's industry for 125 years. This legacy, combined with the potential of green hydrogen, positions the region as a focal point for sustainable transformation. Green hydrogen, as Nigel explains, is the ultimate fuel that can complement electric solutions. He envisions a future where hydrogen powers heavy-duty transport, offering a cleaner alternative that's crucial for industries like logistics.
Roadmap to Net Zero
"At INOVYN we have the technology, capability & skills to build new Hydrogen production facilities. There is a growing demand for Hydrogen across many sectors of society. What is missing is the infrastructure to connect these. This is what we are looking to Government to provide." - Nigel Bouckley
INEOS Inovyn is deeply committed to sustainability, with a roadmap that charts the path to net zero across their UK sites by 2050 and a remarkable - 33% by 2030. Nigel's team operates an alkaline water hydrogen electrolyser demonstration plant in Runcorn and supplies hydrogen to various sectors. They are expanding capabilities to meet growing transport hydrogen demand by offering compressed low carbon hydrogen from 2nd half 2024 onwardsand they're a pivotal part of the HyNet project, storing hydrogen in purpose-built caverns to sustain the North West's industrial cluster.
Government Support and Collaborative Efforts
For the transition to net zero to be successful, Nigel emphasises the need for government-backed infrastructure, especially a comprehensive hydrogen network. He envisions collaboration among industries, including petrochemicals, glass and pharmaceuticals, positioning the North West as a trailblazer for clean energy on a global scale.
Challenges and Milestones
Navigating the challenges of maintaining focus on net zero amidst global complexities is a milestone in itself. Nigel cites operating a clean hydrogen demonstration plant as a pivotal achievement. This tangible proof of concept demonstrates the viability of green hydrogen, solidifying the North West's position as a leader in sustainable energy solutions.
The Future of Clean Energy in the North West
Nigel Bouckley's vision, experience, and determination are propelling the North West towards a greener, more sustainable future. With innovative strategies, collaborative efforts, and a commitment to realism, he's orchestrating a transformation that sets a benchmark for clean energy initiatives not just in the UK, but around the world.
